Beach Meditation
There has been a regular beach meditation opposite the motor boat and yacht club in Hastings (Rock-an-Nore Parade, TN343DW) since 2014. This is open to all, and people come from various Buddhist traditions, or none. The sessions are normally on Sunday mornings at 9.00 am, and Friday mornings at 9.30 am. They normally last for 40 miunutes, and provide an opportunity to practice a meditation of your choice.
For people following the Tibetan tradition, this provides a good opportunity for sky-gazing practices.
Ato Rinpoche says "Look out to the horizon, but do not think 'This is Emptiness' -- just let go."
The 19th-century Tibetan teacher Shabkar wrote:
Be inspired by the wide open sky.
Mind without centre and edge - meditate on that!
Though inner thoughts build up like southern clouds
Mind, like the sky, is at ease.
Be inspired by the vast, unbounded ocean.
Mind without surface or depth - meditate on that!
Thugh inner thoughts roil like waves,
Mind, like the ocean, is at ease.
Milarepa sang:
If meditating on the sky is easy to do,
Southern clouds are the magical display of the sky.
Just rest in the nature of the sky itself.
If meditating on the ocean is easy to do,
Waves are the magical display of the ocean.
Just rest in the nature of the ocean itself.
